MCB Lockouts
A circuit breaker lockout holds an MCB in the off position so the circuit cannot be re-energised while someone is working on it. Switching a breaker off is not an isolation — anyone walking past an open board can flick it back on, and on a live site somebody eventually does. The lockout is what makes the off position hold.
Start at the toggle — proud pin or recessed?
This is the one thing that decides which device fits, and it is the one thing you cannot judge from across the room. Look at the breaker before you order:
- Pin sits proud — MCB Lockout Pin Out Standard. Drops over the protruding toggle pin, hole spacing to 12 mm, single and multi-pole. No tools: push the button, rotate the roller, done.
- Pin sits proud, but wide — Pin Out Wide, the same device sized for a fatter toggle pin.
- Toggle is recessed — MCB Lockout Pin In, the counterpart to the pin-out, with 304 stainless pins. Also one-button, no tools.
- Mixed board, or you would rather not guess — Universal 2-in-1 covers two handle thicknesses in one body: to 9.3 mm in one position, to 12 mm in the other. One device on the van instead of two.
Ordering for a board you have not seen? Photograph the breakers first. A device that will not close on the toggle is a device you cannot use.
Larger frames, and boards that gang
- Clamp-on breaker lockouts — for handles up to 18 mm, 42 mm and 72 mm. Measure the handle at its widest point.
- Medium Circuit Breaker Lockout — the step between a standard MCB device and a moulded-case one.
- MCCB Lockout PA66 — moulded-case breakers, the frame sizes an MCB device will not reach around.
- Tie Bar DIN Rail — locks a run of linked-handle or multi-pole breakers in one go rather than one at a time. Thumbwheel, no tools. Where one isolation covers several circuits in the same board, this is the honest way to do it.
- Schneider Acti9 iC60 — made for that range. If the board is Acti9, this fits where a universal device is a fight.
Cover it instead of gripping it
- MCB Protective Cover — encloses the breaker rather than clamping the toggle, so it cannot be reached at all.
- Universal Wall Switch Cover Lockout — for the wall switch feeding the work rather than the board. Fits toggle and paddle switches on a 38 × 40 mm base hole; nobody flicks what they cannot reach.
The one that needs no padlock
The Self-Locking MCB Lockout clamps over handles up to 10 mm and locks on its own keyed cylinder — no separate padlock, one thing to carry instead of two. The cylinder can be laser-coded into a keyed-alike or master-key plan, so a set runs on one key or under a supervisor override. Tell us the scheme and we will code them to it.
What holds it shut
Every other device here takes a padlock, most a shackle up to 7 mm. See safety padlocks — and for electrical work choose a nylon shackle over steel. Each worker needs their own keyed different lock, so your key releases only your isolation; where several people work the same board, add a hasp so every one of them has a lock on it.
