Hasps
A lockout hasp lets several workers each apply their own safety padlock to a single isolation point. The hasp cannot be released until the last lock comes off — so the machine stays isolated while anyone is still working on it. This is the core device for group lockout, and it is what stops one person’s “all clear” from re-energising the plant on somebody else.
Choose on three things
- How many people. Hasps here take from three to seven padlocks. Count the largest crew that will ever work the isolation, then allow one. For jobs bigger than that, use a group lock box instead.
- Jaw or shackle size. The jaw has to close around the isolation point — 25 mm and 38 mm jaws for standard hasps, up to 80 mm clearance on the large nylon hasp for switchgear. Measure what you are locking on to before ordering; a jaw that will not close is a hasp you cannot use.
- Material. This is the decision that matters most:
Steel, aluminium or nylon?
- Nylon — fully non-conductive. The correct choice for electrical work, and it will not corrode in washdown or chemical areas.
- Steel — the strongest jaw, for mechanical isolation, valves and gates. PA-coated for grip and insulation on the handle.
- Aluminium — spark-proof and lighter to carry all day, where a dropped steel hasp is an ignition risk.
- 316 stainless — for marine, coastal, food-processing and chemical plant, where plated steel rusts out and seizes.
